World’s first commercial product to be designed and developed in association with the British Army targets serious runners
San Diego, CA (March 15, 2006) – UK Gear, the first company to design and develop a commercial product in association with the British Army Physical Training Corps, has recently expanded their distribution of the PT-03 running shoe to the U.S. market.
To create the PT-03 running shoe, David Hinde, Managing Director of UK Gear, approached and enlisted a group of the world’s most demanding athletes: the British Army Physical Training Corps. For over a century, the APTC has developed the challenging physical training program for soldiers within the British Army.
A team of Senior APTC Instructors together with the UK Gear Design Team developed the specification for the PT-03. Prototypes of the PT-03 running shoes were then given to the instructors in the Corps, who were instructed to provide feedback on performance, durability and comfort. This elite group of athletes put the PT-03 through six months of intense testing including hours of track, trail and road running as well as punishing hill running sessions. In total, the PT-03 took over eighteen months to develop from start to finish.
"The PT-03 is a high performance running shoe that has been designed and manufactured to very high standards to maintain technical integrity during rigorous training sessions,” said Hinde. "It's been created with the help of some of the fittest people on the planet – the British Army's own fitness instructors - which means it will stand up to the demands of any runner. Whether they're an elite athlete or occasional jogger when they buy the PT-03 they'll know they are buying a shoe which has been truly tested."
With a focus on durability, shock absorption and foot mechanics, the PT-03 features a myriad of technical features for the serious runner including UK Gear’s QuadraFlex System to manage shock absorption and flexibility. The shoe also features UK Gear’s Torque Control System, a four feature stability system for enhanced torsional support.
The UK Gear PT-03 is the official running shoe of the Carlsbad Marathon and will be worn by pace setters during the marathon this January. UK Gear has also offered an additional purse for the top male and top female runner that finish the race in the PT-03 running shoe, with a $250 individual award and a $250 matching donation to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society for each runner.
UK Gear has also established a presence among the US Military, as a sponsor of the US Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP). The WCAP provides outstanding Soldier-athletes the support and training to compete in national and international athletic competitions, including the World Championships and the Olympics. The team is comprised of athletes from all over the U.S. to include active-duty Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard Soldiers. UK Gear will provide the members of the WCAP with the PT-03 running shoe, and will also receive product feedback on the shoes from the WCAP.
About UK Gear:
Begun in 1993 as a designer and supplier of sports gear for cricket and rugby, UK Gear has developed a reputation for producing high performance competitive gear for some of the world’s top athletes and sports teams. They were the first company to incorporate manmade fibers into international cricket clothing.
In addition to supplying cricket teams across the UK with gear UK Gear has also created official uniforms for the Welsh and Scottish Commonwealth Games teams, the Scottish Athletics Federation and the Athletics Association of Wales. Rugby teams from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are also customers of the UK Gear brand.
Most recently UK Gear has extended their expertise in design and production to a new line of running shoes. The first shoe in the line, the PT-03, was developed in conjunction with the British Military’s Army Physical Training Corps and is the world’s first commercial product to bear the British Army’s famous crossed swords insignia.
